Dear SHTA Friends,
October has begun with us experiencing not dissimilar temperatures as we enjoyed on our exchange visit at the end of June – all that is missing is the long evenings !
Those of us that visited Rouen during our exchange visit may be interested to know that the city hosts the second oldest and second biggest funfair in France from 20th October to 19th November – the Foire Saint-Romain is held on the banks of the River Seine and boasts 230 rides and attracting over 1.5 million people every year. The oldest and biggest being the Foire du Trône on the esplanade of Saint-Gervais in Paris.
We continue our Film Season with the second of the nine monthly French films at the Empire Cinema in Sandwich on Wednesday 18th October.
We will be showing the 2011 film‘La Fille du Puisatier’ (English title – ‘The Well-Digger’s Daughter’).
Here’s a synopsis : –
Jacques Mazel, a 26 year-old pilot in the French Air Force and the only child of a wealthy shopkeeper, is fishing in a stream near his parents’ home and falls in love with a neighbours daughter, on finding she is pregnant after he goes off to war she is sent to a neighbouring village. A happily ever after drama, released in 2011
written and directed by MARCEL PAGNOL who also wrote and directed Jean de Florette and the series of films which followed.
If you’d like to see this romantic drama, which runs for 107 minutes, then contact Jan Cooper on jannicooper@icloud.com or phone her on 01304 612895 to secure your place. The price per person for yet another year remains at £7.50 per person and can be made online in advance to SHTA; account number 42027168; sort code 30-90-09. I’m sure that this will be a very popular one with many, so don’t delay!
Please don’t forget that Annual Subscriptions were due by the end of September, why not use the same bank details above to pay your year’s
membership at the same time if you haven’t got around to renewing as yet ? At our Annual General Meeting held on Thursday 20th July members attending the meeting voted in favour of keeping membership fees at £12.50 per person for at least
another year. Please do try to attend to this sooner rather than later – thank you. Having paid your subscription you’ll be entitled to a membership card which will include details of all film titles and dates, as well as other social activities for 2023-2024.
One further date for your diary worth noting even at this stage is that of our annual Christmas Dinner & Party: this year we shall be returning to Tan Bueno Restaurant in Sandwich on the evening of Thursday 7th December. There will, as usual, be an invitation to dress in festive style and join in the fun and games. For further information regarding cost and exact timings, please keep an eye on the monthly newsletter or the website.
Exciting Opportunity to be a Film Extra
A local film company, who are supporting local cinemas will be coming to Sandwich with camera and crew on our film night next month using our SHTA membership as the audience. We ask you to bring family and friends and make it as large an
audience as we can. It means arriving at the Empire Cinema at 5pm on Wednesday 15th November, before our normal showing of the film to enable us to go upstairs and be filmed ourselves. The film producer is also interested in interviewing those amongst us that knew the cinema years ago and have little vignettes about it.
The cinema staff are very happy about it this and the much needed publicity it brings to promote this asset in our community.
To show our appreciation of the earlier start and your support for this opportunity, following the filming you are invited to come down to the usual film night venue
(before the showing of our film) and enjoy a Free Buffet for all the audience that attend.
The film for 15th November is Demain Tout Commence (English title @Two’s A Family’. There is only room for 50 people to see the film so please Book Early.
Best wishes, Mark (Vice Chair) on behalf of Stuart and the Committee
